UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL

COMMITTEE OVERVIEW

The Security Council, as the UN's most powerful body, is in charge of dealing with any matters that threaten international peace and security. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which was established on January 17th, 1946, aims to develop effective resolutions with clear and compelling language that will have a real-world impact. In dealing with this enormous task, the committee will use a variety of diplomatic instruments that are often accessible to any other organization. The council is made up of 15 members, comprising 5 permanent members with veto power and 10 non-permanent members elected to two-year terms. This is accomplished by a range of activities, including the imposition of economic penalties and the deployment of armed troops when needed. When making decisions, the United Nations Security Council is "the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions on member states". If a country fails to comply with the council's decisions, certain repercussions may be imposed.

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: Tensions in the East Chinese Sea

The East Chinese Sea conflict revolves around the conflict between the Republic of China the People’s Republic of China and other regional actors, where historical, political, and territorial disputes ensue. The essence of the dispute is found in the deeply rooted framework for Taiwanese self-government and Chinese sovereignty. To further complicate this, the involvement of other actors in the region, such as Japan, the United States, and some countries in Southeast Asia, comes into play. Those nations who introduce strategic interest assertions, support Taiwan's continued autonomy, or get co-opted by China shape the geopolitical backdrop of the region but are nonetheless all in a dynamic caught up in a power struggle for influence and control in the East China Sea.
